Strictly nocturnal and non-migratory, the Barn Owl (Tyto alba) is common in San Diego County though many are killed from being hit by cars.
Listen to the raspy shrieks of the Barn Owl; they are distinct from the familiar hoots of other owls. Nest boxes for Barn Owls have become popular in San Diego County as this owl preys on small rodents like mice and rats. Farmers considered the Barn Owl a good omen for naturally controlling rodent populations on the farm, hence the name “Barn” Owl.
