Only 16 miles from the Museum, the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve allows you to enjoy the ocean breeze and hike one of the few remaining coastal wetlands in southern California.
The North Beach Trail is an easy two-mile hike taking you south down the beach where you will be able to see the Channel Islands and even the Plaza de Toros in Tijuana, Mexico across the international border. Take the North Beach Trail on the estuary side along the salt marshes, giving you the opportunity to see rare and endangered shorebirds like the Ridgway’s Rail and the California Least Tern.
