A “wetland”
is an area saturated with permanent or seasonal water creating a unique
ecosystem of aquatic vegetation and plants.
Southern California has 28 wetlands that line the coast from Santa Barbara south to Mexico. Each year more than a billion birds use the Pacific Flyway–a series of wetlands along North America’s west coast–on the migratory journey between their seasonal northern and southern homes. Wetlands are considered the most diverse of all habitats.
